After playing Hollywood's leading lady during awards season, Lady Gaga is about to take on her next major role: co-chair of the Met Gala 2019. The popstar-turned-actor has been invited to sit on Anna Wintour’s advisory panel alongside Harry Styles, Serena Williams and Alessandro Michele for the 71st iteration of the world’s biggest fashion fundraiser. Past ambassadors, including Rihanna and Katy Perry, have performed on makeshift stages within the hallowed exhibition space. But their most documented turns – and the pictures that subsequently populate Instagram feeds – take place on the red carpet. The Met Gala, specifically that staircase the guests must climb, sets the scene for the most fabulous fashion imaginable. Anything goes.
Met Gala 2019: Everything You Need To Know
This year’s theme, Camp: Notes On Fashion, couldn’t be more perfect for a performer who has spent her entire career reinventing the identity she presents to the public. She has a team of creatives – modelled on Andy Warhol’s "Factory" and dubbed the Haus of Gaga – who devote their lives to honing her personal branding. Anyone who thought the singer had entered a new stripped-back style era after the release of her fifth studio album Joanne was mistaken by the simplicity implied by those denim hot pants. The promotional tour for A Star is Born brought with it glorious red-carpet regalia and marked her transition from music icon to silver-screen maven. But throughout the whole process, she has never been tied down to the image society has projected on her.
Lady Gaga Wears Audrey Hepburn's Breakfast At Tiffany’s Jewels At The Oscars
Style sleuths trying to predict what Gaga would wear to the Oscars 2019, for example, were presented with a sartorial curveball from her principle dressers Sandra Amador and Tom Eerebout. She wore two black gowns (one Alexander McQueen, one Brandon Maxwell) after a near clean streak riffing off a pale and interesting palette during awards season. “The element of surprise is so powerful,” Amador told Vogue at the time. “What makes a red carpet exciting is keeping everything unexpected.”
And the jewellery! The internet went into overdrive as Tiffany & Co revealed that it had lent Gaga the exact massive yellow diamond that Audrey Hepburn had worn in the promotional pictures for?Breakfast at Tiffany’s.?“Diamonds carry so much energy within them – it was special to have one with so much history for a truly magical night,” the duo added of the look that ended up being a tribute to Holly Golightly, the Truman Capote character Hepburn played in the 1996 film. Added to that the Golden Globes 2019 fashion moment, which saw her pay homage to Judy Garland, and it’s clear that Gaga goes all-out (in the most unexpected way) when there’s a theme at play.
“Camp” serves up myriad directions in which to take the dresscode, so the collaborative meetings within the Haus of Gaga must have been fruitful. “There’s never been a limit of what you can achieve with her,” said Eerebout, recalling a time when he would create some 10 street-style looks per day for her. “You can put any ideas on the table because she wants to tell a story. There aren't a lot of people that can pull off the things that she does.”
Meet The Duo Who Dress Lady Gaga
Central to the look will, of course, be the performer herself. "Lady Gaga?is?the narrative,” stated Amador. “We have had so much fun doing such drastically different looks while remaining true to?her.” If you expect to see the singer in a frothy tulle confection with bows and embellishment aplenty courtesy of Gucci, the night’s sponsor, think again. We’re hoping for peak Gaga come the first Monday in May, because, baby, she was born this way.
